One question which always springs to mind when the word “micolighting” is mentioned
are these machines safe?
In fact flying a microlight is much safer than flying a light aircraft and very much safer than driving a car based on the CAA civil aviation authority accidents statistics
taken over a 10 year period
Microlight aircraft are one of the strongest aircraft flying today thanks to hi-tech materials
and quality standards manufactures have to work to, enforced by the Bmaa/CAA
Microlights have developed over the years from very basic
to extremely sophisticated yet simple aircraft.
The following famous poem written in 1941 by a young Royal Canadian Airforce pilot John Gilespee Magee is the nearest we can come to describing this truly wonderful feeling....
Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds - and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of - wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there
I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft thro' footless halls of air.
Up, up, the long, delirious burning blue
I've topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace
Where never lark nor even eagle flew -
And while with silent, lifting mind I've trod
The high, untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand and touched the face of God.
Safety
